New York: Beacon, 1958. First Edition. First edition. 188, [4] pp. Bound in publisher's original wraps. Near Fine with slight lean and concavity to spine, pages toned with age, as is typical. An excellent novel set in the South at the beginning of the Civil Rights movement with a moral ambiguity that is no less unsettling now than when it was published. The publisher rejected its original title, The Black Mass of Brother Springer, and gave it a "sexy" cover and blurbs like "He was white. She was beautiful -- and bad" that are completely at-odds with the book's pitchblack-humored style.
