First "authorized translation" of the Ecuadorian author's highly acclaimed first novel, a radical indictment and realistic portrayal of the South American "latifundista" (truncated) system and the exploitation of indigenous Ecuadorians at the hands of ruling elites. First published in 1934, a full English-language translation did not appear until 1962, though that version did not meet with the author's approval, prompting the current new translation which was done with Icaza's collaboration.
