By BECHER, Bernhard und Hilla
New York: Wittenborn and Co, 1970. First American Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Near Fine/Fine. 4to. Unpaginated. Three-column text in German, English, and French. Copiously illustrated with lavish black-and-white photography throughout. Bound in blue cloth with white lettering stamped on front cover and spine. Slight foxing to endpapers. In the photo-illustrated dust jacket. First American edition of the author-artists' first book, published the same year as Dusseldorf edition.

The Becher's methodical documentation of blast furnaces, grain silos, cooling towers, gas tanks (here, "Gas-holders") and other industrial structures, presented in lush-but-dispassionate photography that established a new form unto itself. Equal parts architectural photography, historical record, conceptual art and art-for-art's sake, their work was striking enough to be collected by major museums. A handsome copy. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
