(ca 1920s); 9 1/4 x 6 1/2; black cloth over boards; the first 10 volumes printed and decorated in gilt, the other 6 - in silver; each illustrated with portrait frontis; generally mild wear - some of the volumes with a bit of rubbing to gilt and silver; volume I with a small spot to spine; a few small spots to top edge of text block; overall in very good or better condition.Richard Francis Burton (1821 - 1890) was a British author, explorer, captain in the army of the East India Company and polyglot - allegedly fluent in twenty-nine languages. Arguably his most famous work - the current translation of the commonly called Arabian Nights - was considered pornography when published and contained the most explicit description of homosexuality in any language for a long period of time.
