Bray discusses the development and theoretical basis for what was called the Doctrine Classique, which referred to 17th-century French literature written from the time of Henry IV through the reign of Louis XIV. This literature is associated with the Classicism of Louis XIV's reign; its authors practiced ideals of order, clarity, proportion and good taste. Small quarto. Red leather over blue marbled paper covered boards with gilt title to spine. Marbled endpapers. Front cover is slightly bowed and also slightly bent at upper right corner. Loss of small portions of paper to front board. Minor wear to edges. Wear to both joints. Small open tears on front free endpaper, due to brittle paper. Pages show some browning, with foxing on some pages, especially in early section of book. Also some foxing on edge of text block. 389 pages, including index. FRELANG/082422.
