By Flaubert, Gustave; Kaus, Max
Potsdam-Berlin: Gustav Kiepenheuer Verlag, 1919. Very good.. Second edition, Flaubert's Legend of Saint Julien, illustrated with twelve lithographs by Max Kaus. A striking series of early lithographs by Kaus, from the immediate post-war period. Kaus initially learned lithographic technique from Ernst Heckel, with whom he improvised a wartime printing press out of salvaged wood from destroyed railway station paneling (Walde); in 1918 and following, Kaus continued to produce prints and painting along Expressionist lines to a mixed reception from contemporary critics and the continuing interest of later generations. Original quarter brown cloth with black and brown boards. 46, [2] pages. Illustrated with twelve black and white lithographs by Kaus. 2. und 3. Tausend. In German, translation by Elsa von Hollander. Moderate scuffing and light soil to boards, with several vertical tears and some small loss to cloth of spine.
