Berkeley: Schmidt, Skilling Co., [ca. 1910].. Lithographed folding map, 10 x 10 3/4 inches. Three vertical folds. Near fine. A small, unrecorded folding map showing roads, railways, and tracts of land in Berkeley, California issued in the wake of the 1906 earthquake. The map shows Berkeley, the University of California, and neighborhoods including North Cragmont, Northbrae, and Cerrito Hill. Also identified are the locations of banks, parks, and various housing tracts, as well as the Hotel Claremont and Claremont Country Club and the route of a "proposed scenic railway" to Grizzly Peak (which sadly never came to be). A series of concentric circles centered on Berkeley's City Hall show relative distance. The Schmidt-Skilling Company was a general real estate company located in Berkeley, so this small map was likely made privately to encourage potential buyers. The map was drafted by Charles Green, who is also known for creating a large, detailed birds-eye view of the same city. We were able to locate no other copies. (Inventory #: WRCAM57513)
