Frances Kellor (1873-1952) was raised by her mother in poverty but went on to receive a law degree and study sociology at the University of Chicago. She studied immigration, prison conditions, and fought for women's rights.
She directed the National Americanization Committee during World War I. Th group worked to Americanize immigrants and integrate them into the economy.
Kellor maintained a household in Brooklyn and Bar Harbor with wealthy reformer Mary Dreier from 1905 to 1952.
This copy is inscribed by Kellor to Ruth Standish Baldwin (1865-1934) founder of the National Urban League and an active suffragette and champion of racial equality.
