18 Drawings by Alexis A. Julien, created between 1859 and 1865
Eighteen Drawings by Alexis Anastay Julien were created between 1859 and 1865. Many have initials. They are sketches that include locations in the Catskills, Massachusetts, and along the Delaware River. Several of the drawings are on the verso of St. Denis Hotel broadsides from the 1850's. Five of the broadsides inform guests that the hotel has limited liability for stolen goods and offers guests the use of the hotel safe. Two other broadsides are in Spanish and are printed on coated stock. Dated 1856 and mention the hotel's restaurant and the proximity to a museum in Union Square and Grace Church. The hotel Denis owned by Alexis's father, and the hotel was a prominent meeting for chess players. Julien 1840-191 was a geologist and founding member of the NY Microscopical Society of NY and a long-time teacher at Columbia.
