A Representation Made by the Lower House of Convocation to the Archbishops and Bishops

  • London , 1705
London, 1705. (Censorship). (Church of England). A Representation Made by the Lower House of Convocation to the Archbishops and Bishops... Showing the Diligence of the Lower, and Remissnes of the Upper-House in Suppressing Books Published Against the Truth of Christianity... London, Printed in the Year 1705. 4to. 8pp., neatly disbound. Very good.

A plea for censorship singling out John Toland's "Christianity not Mysterious" (1696), a "bible" of freethought which was prosecuted in London and burned in Dublin, and is here deemed "pernicious, dangerous, scandalous, and destructive of the Christian faith... We.. repeat that request... that you... use your interest in Parliament for the passing a bill against the licentiousness of the press." The "representation," dated December, 1704, is not to be confused with another "representation" of April 1703 published in 1704. Both, however, reflect the "acrimonious controversy as to the rights and powers of convocation which raged at that period... "--DNB under Edmund Gibson. ESTC and OCLC list two U.S. holdings (UCLA, SIU) of this, and three (CTY, TxU, DFo) of a 7-page London edition. Not in McCoy (1968) but at SIU.
