Rouquette (1813-1887) was born outside New Orleans to a French father and a Creole mother. He spent his childhood with local Choctaw friends and went on to attend college in Kentucky and France before becoming a priest in New Orleans. He left his position in New Orleans in 1859 and spent the remainder of his life ministering to Choctaw communities along Lake Pontchartrain. He and his siblings were poets, and this one of the few published works by Rouquette who signs his poem with his Choctaw name Chahta- Ima.
