Poetry Copy Book Belonging to H. [Hugh] B. Lougee of East Parsonfield, Maine

c.1880's. Twenty one pages of poetry. Among the poems is Edmund Clarance Stedman's poem in John Brown. Lougee was a framer, teacher and member of the Free Will Baptists. During his lifetime in Parsonsfield, the Free Will Baptists had a seminary that served the Underground Railroad. In the 1850's the school was burned, killing several students and enslaved people. Although they blamed the anti-abolitionists, they could never prove it.
