The account of the fur trade - the first ever published (truncated) - is attributed to Roderick Mackenzie" (Howes). Mackenzie's route led him from Montreal along the north shore of Lake Superior to the present site of Grand Portage, Minnesota, thence along Minnesota's northern border to Rainey Lake and Lake of the Woods, before heading north into Canada.
