Nashville, Tennessee: Published by Ben Harding, [1839]. 12mo (7.5" x 4.75"), illustrated self wrappers, disbound from sammelband. 33, [3] pp. Illus. CONDITION: Good, front wrapper toned; some offsetting, toning, and a few minor stains within.

Volume 2, No. 2 in this celebrated series of almanacs, containing a variety of tall tales in backwoods dialect, illustrated with wood engravings. The contents include The Heroine of Kaintuck; Col. Crockett and the Bear and the Swallows; Gum Swamp Breeding; A Goose Pulling; Severe Courtship; The Way They Travel in the West, and more.

The Crockett almanacs contributed much to the American tradition of the tall tale. "It was the Crockett 'Almanacks' which made Crockett a legendary figure and a part of American folk-lore" (Grolier Club, One Hundred Influential Books). This 1840 'Almanac' has an illustration on the front wrapper showing Crockett "Scared by an Owl" as it calls out "Whoo-Whoo- Whoop!" As noted by AAS, the publisher's name is fictitious. Harding is a character who appears in the almanac, and is based on Ben Hardin (1784-1852), a Whig Congressman from Kentucky.
