Plain Directions for Accidents, Emergencies, and Poisons : keep this where you can readily find it... Enlarged edition. One hundred twentieth thousand

  • New York: Mutual Life Insurance Company of New-York, 1875
By [Turner, Alexis Paul; a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and physician to several of the charitable institutions of the same city.]
New York: Mutual Life Insurance Company of New-York, 1875. Octavo (18.5 x 13 cm.), 126 pages. Illustrated. Appendix. Index. Stated "Enlarged edition" and "one hundred twentieth thousand". Author name from OCLC records. While all recorded printings prior to this are dated 1875, the "one hundred tenth thousand" and other lower numbers contain the printers slug "S.W. Green, Printer". This work appeared in shorter form(64 pages) in 1874, credited to Alexis Paul Turner (1840-1892), for sale by James Hammond, and "Distributed through the Howard Hospital and Infirmary for Incurables, 1518 and 1520 Lombard Street, Philadelphia." The many subsequent printings were publications of the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. It's only fitting that an insurance company would publish a guide to first aid in the home. And this guide, developed by doctors at Howard Hospital, was "Distributed to its policy-holders by the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New-York, F.S. Winston, President." Some light age-toning to text block. Gray wrapper, titled and decorated in black, and with a printed number ticket applied to spine; some light wear to wrapper at spine, otherwise near fine. The wrapper contains the stamps of "Amos D. Smith, General Agent, Boston" and "Highland Springs Public Library". [OCLC locates no copies labled "one hundred twentieth thousand" and just twenty copies of all 1875 printings; just one copy of the 64 page, 1874 edition].
