Lavender cloth-covered boards with "Carter's Fireside Library" blindstamped to front and back panels and gilt lettering to spine. Boards heavily rubbed along edges and corners, with fading along edges, scuffing and some exposure along joints, and a dime-sized coffee-stain at bottom back corner; spine ends nudged and frayed, with gilt of spine lettering mostly rubbed away. Front free endpaper cleanly torn out. Pages moderately foxed and toned. Textblock opens easily between gatherings with a bit of separation starting at center, but binding is still holding. Small reference notation in pen on back pastedown, else pages unmarked.

Memoir of the Royal Navy officer and surveyor, who died during the Battle of Canton in 1857, first published both in the U.S. and U.K. in 1859.
