He would be the propounder of the Gardener Spring Resolutions, adopted by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of the United States, which would precipitate the creation of the Presbyterian Church of the Confederate States. His current speech was delivered on the occasion of the ordination of poet and minister Carlos Wilcox (1794 - 1827) at the North Congregational Church in Hartford.
