The two exceptional monographs in the volume are the Hartig and Hoffbauer. Hoffbauer is best known for his early psychiatric studies. In this monograph he addresses the pathology of head wounds but also the methods and basis for judging them to be fatal. Hartig's work presents a non-surgical method of sealing a cleft palate - this is a mechanical method of joining the two parts and also addresses the derivation of such uncommon "mechanical" cures. A most interesting and little known work. Baumgarten addresses the surgical treatment of strabismus. He was a co-worker of Friedrich von Ammon in the relatively new field of plastic-surgery.
