1942 · Buffalo, NY
Buffalo, NY: Western New York District Communist Party, 1942. Handbill. 9x12 inch handbill, green paper faded around the edges, receipt date of August 1942 rubberstamped at bottom edge; closed edge tear at top. "In this grave crisis, when our future is at stake, we are confronted with the tragic events in India. Instead of [a] second front being opened now against the Nazi beasts, an attack has been opened up against the Indian people. Instead of killing Japanese and German soldiers, the British die-hards are killing the people of India. All the Indian people ask is their freedom and the right to fight the Axis as an independent people. This is the avowed aim of the Atlantic Charter signed by the United Nations. It must not be just a promise, it must become a living fact if we expect India to give her all in this, the people's war. The majority of the Indian people do not follow Gandhi's 'neutrality' policy. They know the main enemy is the Axis. The dangerous and confusing action of the British rulers in suppressing the just demands of the Indian people must be stopped NOW.... It is your duty to urge President Roosevelt to throw the great moral force of our country into the scales to save India as a whole for the United Nations. It is your duty to yourself and the Nation to let President Roosevelt know that you support him in his agreement to open a Second Front in Europe immediately. The people of Buffalo know that Victory for the Axis beasts will destroy every liberty we cherish, the right of free speech, assembly, religion and the right to adequate security.
