First and only Aldine edition of a compilation of ancient Roman writings on geography and cosmography. Mela was an early Roman geographer and author of the only ancient treatise on geography in classical Latin titled De Situ orbis (A Description of the World), referred to in the title here. Also included are Solinuss description of the classical world that was based on Plinys Natural History and Melas geography. The Itinerarium compiled by Antoninus provides a concise survey of the whole of the Roman Empire. Vibius Sequester lists the names of the principal rivers and notable landforms known to the Romans. Victors work on the topography of ancient Rome, which appears here for the first time, is an important source for the identification of Roman ruins.
