[New Haven, Connecticut]: Yale School of Drama, 1966. Unbound. Very Good. Poster (25 ¼" x 38"). Designed by Joel Katz for Megan Terry's rock musical *Viet Rock* at the Yale Repertory Theatre on October 11-23, 1966 with music composed by Marianne de Pury. Gently rolled, tiny pin holes at the edges and corners with tiny nicks and tears at the bottom corners, a couple small dampstains at the margins, faint creases, copyright label affixed to lower edge, tape residue and a small abrasion on verso, very good.
Terry is an American playwright, screenwriter, and a founding member of the experimental theater group, The Open Theater in New York City. She created *Viet Rock* using a technique she developed called "transformation", in which actors would improvise dialogue in an attempt to "transform" into characters.
*Viet Rock* was the first play to address America's involvement in the Vietnam War, and also the first rock musical to be written and performed in the United States. The play was described by Terry as a "folk war movie" about the "futilities and irrelevancies" of war. The poster here is for the play's preview run at the Yale Repertory Theatre before opening off-Broadway. Cast member, Gerome Ragni along with fellow actor James Rando, would go on to use the anti-war theme and Terry's "transformation" technique to create the rock musical, *Hair.* A striking poster for a groundbreaking and influential rock musical.
