In 1887, Rev. T.S. Childs was appointed to investigate complaints made against the Hampton Institute Indian Department related to the health and discipline of students at the Carlisle and Hampton Indians Schools. Early in 1888 he submitted a report on the health of students, the food and diet, the climate, education, and other factors at both institutions. He wanted to discuss his findings with the President.
Cleveland agreed to meet with him. Autograph Letter Signed as President, Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, July 21, 1888, to Rev. T.S. Childs. “My dear Sir: I will be glad to see you this afternoon at three o’clock if you can make it convenient to call at that hour. Yours sincerely.” Fine condition with the original envelope addressed in Cleveland’s hand.
