New York: Samuel French, 1931. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition. Quarter black cloth gilt and green cloth. Near fine. Barrett H. Clark's copy with his tiny penciled initials on the front fly. Additionally there is a small inked note in an unknown hand: “1 of 50 copies bound for the author.” Clark was the publisher of Samuel French and director of the Drama League of America. He helped guide playwrights, such as Eugene O’Neill and Maxwell Anderson, and encouraged American dramatists to tell real stories of working-class people, using language derived from everyday life. A play that was the basis for a 1920 film.
