This copy inscribed by Modisane "Especially for Wayne Fredericks. Maybe some day I'll show you the site of Sophiatown - and make you an honorary Zulu. Sincerely, Bloke Modisane, London, Sept. 1963." Sophiatown is a multiracial suburb in Johannesburg, South Africa. Modisane (1923-1986) was a South African writer, actor, and journalist. In this, his first book, Modisane "detailed his despair at the bulldozing of Sophiatown (mirroring Can Themba's short story "Requiem (truncated) for Sophiatown") and his frustration and anger with apartheid. As a result, the book was banned in South Africa in 1966" (Wikipedia). Jacob Wayne Fredericks (1917–2004) was an American businessman and diplomat who served as the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 1961 until 1967, and often acted as a liaison with African liberation groups.
