- SIGNED
(OREGON). ADS. 8 x 10. April 18, 1870. Lane County, Oregon. An autographed document signed by various Oregon legal luminaries petitioning the Circuit Court of Oregon On the matter of the admission of Gen EL Applegate to practice in the courts of the Second Judicial District of Oregon. Signers of the petition, each in their own hand, are a whos who of mid-19th century Oregon legal leaders, including R. Strahan (Reuben S. Strahan, later the 15th Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 1890-1892), R Williams (Richard Williams, later a congressman from 1877-1879), A.A. Skinner (Alonzo Skinner, previously a Justice on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1866-1867), John Burnett (a future judge on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1874-1876), among others. However, the most fascinating signature is CH Miller on the bottom left, the signature of Cincinnatus Heine Miller, better-known by his pen name, Joaquin Miller. The year after this petition, Miller finalized his nickname as the Poet of the Sierras when he published his most famous work, Songs of the Sierras. The petition is in very good condition.
