Annie Besant (1847-1933) was a British socialist, feminist, activist, and writer who played a prominent role in the Theosophical Society, a spiritual movement that aimed to unite humanity through the study of religion, philosophy, and science. She was a vocal advocate for women's suffrage, workers' rights, and the nationalization of industry, and supported Indian independence, birth control, and sex education. Besant published over 300 books and pamphlets on a variety of topics, including Theosophy, which she wrote extensively about and rose to become the society's president in 1907.
