History of Battle-Flag Day: September, 17, 1879 (Inscribed Association Copy)
- SIGNED Publisher's Cloth
- Hartford, CT: Lockwood & Merritt, 1890
Hartford, CT: Lockwood & Merritt, 1890. 2nd Edition. Publisher's Cloth. Near Fine. 8vo., viii(1)290. Sharp Second Edition, published one year after the first, of this commemoration day of parades and celebrations for the veterans of Connecticut, gathering all the regiments that participated in the Civil War. Certainly one of the earliest celebrations of its kind for veterans with Veteran's Day not being made a national Holiday until 1926 and done so to commemorate the end of WWI. Beautifully bound in publisher's original blue cloth with blind-stamped borders and titles and flag motif stamped in gilt on front board and titles in gilt on spine. Top-edge gilt now a bit dulled. 24 illustrations including frontis portrait ofMajor-General Joseph R. Hawley, who served in the Civil War and became Governor of CT. Square, tight and clean throughout with very light page toning but no foxing. Bottom front hinge paper split 2" and repaired but joint strong. Trivial wear to spine ends and tips. Spine mildly toned but front gilt quite fresh and bright. Inscribed by the publisher to competing Hartford publisher Worthington on the front end-paper, "To Mr. A.D. Worthington, Compliments of Mr. H. Lockwood". A gorgeous collectable copy. Not terribky uncommon but certainly scarce with this association.
