Two 6 1/2 inches tall hardcover volumes, 3/4 brown calf, rubbed, marbled boards, spine gilt, raised bands, gilt leather label, xi + (1 blank) + 352pp, with engraved title and frontispiece, 5 engravings (of trees) in text; v + (1 blank) + 283 + (1) pp. Very good in custom archival mylar covers. The author seeks to kindle a warmth rather than hostility towards the animal kingdom. with some 260 short entries of anecdotes and observations on the habits and characteristics of animals, birds, fish, and their relationships with each other, also plants and phenomena in nature, and naturalists and country workers. Also described are features in the parks surrounding London - Hampton Court, Richmond, Bushy, Windsor Great Park. This edition is listed in Charles Darwin's reading notebooks.

EDWARD JESSE (1780-1858) was an English writer on natural history, who became clerk in a government office in 1798, and for a time was secretary to Lord Dartmouth, when president of the Board of Control. In 1812 he was appointed commissioner of hackney coaches, and later he became deputy surveyor-general of the royal parks and palaces.
