First published by John Newbery in London in 1765 and often attributed to Oliver Goldsmith, Giles and Griffith Jones, or even Newbery himself, the first American edition of Little Goody Two Shoes has become known as the black tulip of American children's books. The 1787 Isaiah Thomas edition had long been thought to be the first American edition of this famous nursery classic, notwithstanding a 1774 advertisement by Hugh Gaine, until Rosenbach purchased a defective example of this edition in 1934.
There are eight recorded examples of the Hugh Gaine first edition, only two of which are complete (Yale and Princeton copy 2).
