1969. United States military weapons and ammunition development documented in a group of photographs produced during the Cold War era at or associated with the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri, circa late 1960s to early 1970s. The plant was established in 1941 to manufacture and test small caliber ammunition for the United States Army and remained a central component of the American military supply system throughout World War II, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. These photographs record weapons systems, ammunition testing materials, and military equipment connected to the production and evaluation of small arms used by U.S. forces. The images therefore provide visual documentation of the industrial infrastructure supporting American military operations during the Vietnam War period.

Photo archive consisting of 82 high resolution color and black and white photographs depicting firearms, mounted weapons, ammunition components, and military vehicles associated with American defense manufacturing. The photographs show automatic weapons, pistols, and mounted guns produced or tested by manufacturers including Colt, Remington, and Winchester. Several black and white photographs document the Thompson submachine gun fitted with a drum magazine as well as a mounted M16 style rifle with a drum magazine attached to a tripod. Other photographs show ammunition components and diagnostic X ray images of cartridges, illustrating different calibers including 7.62 mm and 5.56 mm rounds. Additional images depict the M113 armored personnel carrier and the Ford Philco GAU 7/A Gatling prototype machine gun originally designed for installation in the F 15 fighter aircraft program during the late 1960s. A photograph of a Colt revolver appears to show a production stamp dated 1971 beneath the chamber, providing a probable timeframe for the documentation. A small number of photographs also depict plant personnel standing near tables covered with ammunition shells, indicating work environments connected to ammunition manufacturing and inspection.

During the Cold War and the Vietnam War era, facilities such as the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant supplied large volumes of ammunition used by United States armed forces in Southeast Asia and other global deployments. Industrial production of small arms ammunition formed a central component of the American defense system, linking government arsenals, private manufacturers, and testing facilities responsible for the development and evaluation of weapons technology. The archive therefore preserves visual documentation of the industrial and technological processes that supported American military operations during this period. Eighty two photographs, most measuring approximately 8 x 10 inches with several smaller prints measuring approximately 3 x 4 inches, preserved in plastic sleeves within a ring bound binder. Minor age toning present; photographs remain clear overall. Overall condition very good.
