Hollywood: The ASC Press. 1989. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. [essentially an as-new book, downgraded from "Fine" only due to the presence of a small array of tiny brown spots on the top edge; the jacket is very lightly surface- and edge-worn, and has a soft vertical crease an a bit of light wrinkling at the lower left corner of the front panel]. (B&W photographs) A themed collection of previously-published "historical" articles from back issues of American Cinematographer magazine. ; These are terrific articles -- detailed, behind-the-scenes production histories of about two dozen films that fall under that rather broadly-defined "adventure/romance/terror" rubric. Given the orientation of the magazine in which these originally appeared, it's not surprising that the articles occasionally skew a little to the "tech" side -- but the individual writers never lose sight of the history-lines, nor do they muddy up their scholarly work with more than basic critical evaluation of the film in question. (Editor Turner seems to have written at least half these pieces, with other contributors being Rudy Behlmer, Scott MacQueen, Paul Mandell, George J. Mitchell, and Michael H. Price.) The movies thus chonicled include: THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1923); THE BAT (multiple versions); WINGS; ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT; DRACULA; FRANKENSTEIN; CREATION (unproduced Willis O'Brien project); WHITE ZOMBIE; THE BLACK CAT; CRIME WITHOUT PASSION; FLASH GORDON; CAT PEOPLE; LAURA; OUT OF THE PAST; NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.**** .
