BOMB's founders—New York City artists and writers—decided to publish a magazine that reflected the way they spoke about their work among themselves. Under founding editor Betsy Sussler, BOMB Magazine has been featuring such conversations between artists of all disciplines since its 1981 debut. The early issues include conversations between Michael McClard and Kathy Acker, Amos Poe and Sarah Charlesworth, Gary Indiana and Max Blagg, Barbara Kruger and Richard Prince, Valie Export and Gary Indiana, Duncan Hannah and Simon Lane, among others, as well as texts contributed by Cookie Mueller, Lynne Tillman, Terence Sellers, Liza Béar, and visual artwork by Duncan Hannah, Lan Payne, Keith Haring, Nan Goldin and William Wegman. Nos. 1 though 9 are increasingly scarce in the marketplace, and unbroken runs are rare.
