A summary report on the Greenback Controversy, in which voter fraud was alleged in the contested Maine state election of 1879. Alonzo Garcelon, a former Republican and opponent of “radical Republicanism”-turned-Democrat, contested the results of the September 1879 election, in which Democrats lost the governor’s office and seats in the state legislature to the Republican Party. Garcelon alleged that Democrat votes were suppressed and Republicans installed in the state legislature by means of bribery. Republicans led by Republican state senator James Blaine descended on the state capital to protest and Garcelon left office in January 1880. The Hale Committee was formed in February of 1880 to investigate the events, and it is this committee’s work which is criticized in the present tract, commissioned by Garcelon and his political allies in the Democratic Party.
