The Nineteen Hundred and Thirty Four Makio (Illustrated By Rockwell Kent)

Columbus, Ohio: Published By the Junior Class of Ohio State University, 1934. First Edition. Quarto. 399 pages. The negotiations to get Rockwell Kent to illustrate the 1934 edition were confirmed in the campus newspaper The Lantern in January 11, 1934. The six zinc etchings were received on January 24, 1934. The book was printed at the Stoneman Company of Columbus, but the Rockwell Kent engravings were not added until three weeks before classes ended. The book was issued in original silver and green pictorial black cloth binding designed by Kent. 6 tipped-in plates on a heavy ivory stock at each of the section introductions. This was the only instance of the University contracting with a professional artist to design and illustrate the OSU Yearbook. George Bellows, Lois Lenski, Gardner Rea and Milton Caniff had all contributed illustrations to Makios in their own eras - but participated as student-artists. This work not in Johnson. The book was printed on a heavy coated glossy stock, bound in black cloth with a strip of green cloth and 8 silver stars spine, lettering green with 8 silver stars. The last text page is separated at gutter. A very nice clean copy.
