The Beam-Trawl Fishery of Great Britain.

  • Washington DC: GPO, 1889
By Collins, J.W.

Washington DC: GPO, 1889. "With notes on beam-trawling in other European countries." Collins was an important man in the US Fishery Commission, contributing dozens of articles - including a short biography of the Gloucester hero Howard Blackburn - over a period of three decades of his employment. He was also an experienced seaman, and captained the Fishery research vessel "Grampus" during tests on the practicability of beam-trawling in the American commercial fisheries. An early study of this environmentally unfriendly form of fishing that, for a while, dominated the industry. This is an offprint from the 1887 "Bulletin of Commercial Fisheries" in its own dedicated binding - brown cloth with gold lettering, showing some surface wear. Scarce in this original format, with only reprints available.. 29.5 cm. pp. 289-407. b/w plates and ills. in text.
