One of the major 19th century astronomers who while at Yale with his mentor Denison Olmsted was first in America to see Halley's comet. Loomis went on to become a major astronomer and mathematician at Yale. His textbooks on astronomy, meteors and mathematics became essential works for university students in the late 19th century. Pages 199-202 deal with both Halleys Comet and Encke's Comet. Bound in full calf, flat spine ruled in gilt, black label gilt, lacks front free endpaper, small split to upper joint near foot. A very good copy.
