THOMAS J. STONEWALL JACKSON (1824-1863). A brilliant Confederate general, Jackson graduated from West Point and served in the Mexican War. He taught at the Virginia Military Institute, then joined the Confederacy when the Civil War broke out. He fought at both Bull Runs, Antietam and Fredericksburg, and devised the Shenandoah Valley campaigns. He was accidentally shot by his own troops after his brilliant victory at Chancellorsville.Contemporary copy. 1 pg. 8x 4. September 2, 1862. Headquarters, Valley District. A contemporary copy of an original autograph letter signed By order of Maj Genl Jackson, J.G. Morrison A.D.C.. to Genl Early: General, General Jackson directs that you order forward immediately your commissary wagons & cattle, and cook three days rations, commencing with tomorrow, and have them put in the mens haversacks. He also directs that you supply your command with ammunition, and have everything in readiness for action by dawn tomorrow. Though not written in Jacksons hand, this letter was written by Joseph G. Morrison, his brother-in-law and aide-de-camp. It reveals Jacksons military mindset, to constantly keep moving and to be on the attack. This letter was written just days after Second Manassas, a clear Confederate victory that pushed the Union Army back towards Washington. However, rather than rest, Jackson immediately started to move. By the end of September, he had captured Harpers Ferry and oved into Maryland, a movement that would culminate in Antietam. The letter is written in pencil and is easy to read.
