Peacetime Conscription -- Another Fellow Who Was for It! [with:] Conscription
- New York , 1945
New York, 1945. Still very good.. Two small broadsides, each measuring approximately 11 x 7 inches. Some toning at edges. Two broadside flyers issued by a little known pacifist group, the Anti-Conscription Committee, during the last year of World War II. The first, titled "Peacetime Conscription...," invokes Hitler's introduction of compulsory military training in Germany in 1935 and quotes an enthusiastic editorial from the Des Moines Tribune calling for the same in America. The broadside intones at its foot, "A nation followed these ideas! Do you want America to do the same?" The second flyer, "Conscription?," warns its reader of the imminence of a Congressional bill that would mandate a year of military training that would, "Bring about vast changes in our American way of life." Following this warning is a laundry list of diverse associations arrayed against the potential law, including the Rabbinical Association of America, the N.A.A.C.P., the American Federation of Labor, the Society of Friends, and the W.T.C.U., to name but a few. A pair of scarce survivors.
