The Constellation Question.

  • Washington: Smithsonian Institution, 1970
By Chapelle, Howard I. and Leon Polland.

Washington: Smithsonian Institution, 1970. The "Constellation Question" centers around that famous vessel's 20th century restoration. In 1968 Howard Chapelle published a monograph "questioning the authenticity of the present day Constellation." Leon Pollard, Technical Advisor to the project, questioned Chapelle's questioning. Though Pollands position has been discredited in part, his construction work maintains its integrity. A marvelous rabbit hole for summer rabbit hole diving, with much detail on early American Naval vessels emerging from the debate. First edition. Very good condition in publisher's decorated binding.. 26.5 cm. viii, 152 pp. b/w folding plans and line ills.
