Before launching into his reminiscences of his travels from 1968 to 1976 deep into the region, Paul Roca provides chapters on the geography of the Tepehuan countryside, the background of the Tarahumaran (Raramuri) peoples living in the 60,000-square-kilometer area, the spiritual assault by the Society of Jesus on the harsh barrancas of the Tarahumara between 1611 and 1767. Probably the most useful feature of this volume is its 71 page "Biographical Directory," which provides a raft of (truncated) pertinent details about Jesuits, key Spanish civil and military figures, and Tarahumara chieftains.
