Geological Map of Long & Staten Islands with the Environs of New York

New York: William W. Mather, 1842. unbound. Map. Original hand color. Sheet measures 25" x 53". This large format geological map of Long Island is one of the most beautiful and detailed maps of the region to appear in the 19th century. A 15 point reference explains geological features as well as Railroads and canals. Extending from New Jersey and Staten Island east as far as Montauk and Fisher's Island, it covers parts of New Jersey and Connecticut, Westchester, Rockland County as well as all of New York City including Staten Island. Incredibly detailed, the map notes the detailed early street grid in lower Manhattan and northern Brooklyn as well as (truncated) geological features throughout. This map, issued before the American Civil War, shows a relatively pre-developed Long Island and labels communities, towns and roads. The partially completed Long Island Railroad is also noted. A large inset in the lower right corner details the geology and topography of Manhattan with major streets marked. This map was based on the survey work of J. Calvin Smith and issued in W. W. Mather's "Geology of New York, Vol. I". Map is in very good conditions with minimal wear along folds and minor foxing. Slight toning and offsetting at places. Minor edge rip near left margin, not affecting image. Two sheets joined together, as issued. William William Mather (1804 - 1859) was an American geologist from Brooklyn Connecticut. He was admitted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1823 where his interest in chemistry and mineralogy led him the become the Assistant Professor of Geology. He would resign from the Army in 1836 and dedicated himself exclusively to Science. He published several papers on chemistry and geology and was a member of many scientific and historical societies. Today, the W.W. Mather Medal is an important Geological Research commendation. This map, a must for any Long Island map collector, is a good example of his work. (Inventory #: 316973)
