Philadelphia: printed for Mathew Carey, John Conrad & Co., [et al.], 1806. 8vo, pp. cxxxi, [1], 1122; lexicon in double column; full contemporary calf, maroon morocco label on spine; small corner torn from title page and following leaf causing loss to the ends of several lines of text; the whole rubbed and worn, joints partially cracked, spine ends chipped; text block sound and relatively clean. Taken from the fourth London edition, this contains Walker's final corrections (Walker died in 1807). Walker's seminal work on pronunciation, first published in 1791, was subsequently married with Johnson's text, and editions of Johnson-Walker proliferated (truncated) into the 20th century. Thus did Walker's pronunciations become synonymous with not only standard English, but also good breeding and social standing, and it remains the basis of English speech today. Vancil, p. 248.
