1803 · Hartford
by Webster, Noah
Hartford: Hudson & Goodwin, n.d., 1803. Small 8vo, pp. viii, [9]-165, [1]; 8 vignette woodcuts illustrative of the fables; original calf-backed paper-covered boards, extremities rubbed, some staining of the boards, joints professionally reinforced, leaf I2 with short tear (no loss); a good, sound copy. The cuts are, in Skeel's words, "now badly worn." Early editions of Webster's Speller are not common; 18th-century editions are virtually unheard of. Originally published in 1783 as A Grammatical Institute, Part I, the title was changed to The American Speller in 1787. The text underwent a substantial revision by Webster in 1804.
