Blake, The strike in the American (truncated) novel, p. 261. Jeter, a reporter in Jack Conroy's home town of Moberly, Missouri based the novel on a local shoe factory strike. Jeter had a couple of times in the local paper red-baited Conroy, but was still upset when Conroy gave a bad review to the novel. (Inventory #: 310100)
