by Lorrequer, Harry; Editor (Pseudonym of Charles Lever)
Dublin: William Curry, Jun. and Company, 1841. 1st Edition. Full-Leather. Fine/No Jacket. Phiz. 2 Volumes complete, 4to. Beautiful First Book Edition of Lever's second novel, and perhaps his most popular and endearing. Originally published in serial format in monthly numbers from March 1840 through December 1941. Beautifully bound in later full dark brown morocco with 5 raised spine bands with titles stamped in gilt in two compartments and finial designs stamped in gilt in other compartments as well as on the four corners of both boards. Multi-layered gilt turn-ins. bordering leather insets. Marbled end-papers. Silk bookmarks. A simply gorgeous production. The binding is signed by Little, Brown & Co., who went on to publish the American edition and likely took the sheets from the Irish Edition, which was the first, and had them bound for a specific customer. Bound in volume 1 is the cover from Part 1 of the original serialization. Tissue guarded frontis illustrations in both volumes plus illustrated title pages present as called for. Illustrated throughout by Phiz, (Hablot Knight Browne). Both volumes are square, tight and clean throughout with little wear save a touch of rubbing to hinges, tips and the rear board of volume 1. A quite handsome and very collectable set in a stunning binding. Please note: International and Priority orders may require additional postage.
