Uncommon edition of the world's best known work of erotic fiction, published for The Bibliophiles as "a new and genuine edition from the original text (London, 1749)" as described on the title page, and handsomely bound by "Thierry" (binder stamp top edge verso ffe). Thierry is renowned Art Noveau binder who took over the Simier workshop, located at 152 Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, following Charles Petit around 1873 and ran it alone until his association in 1908 with Louis Yseux. 8vo, deep blue, full crushed morocco, raised gilt-ruled bands, covers gilt single-ruled, (truncated) all edges gilt-ruled, elaborately tooled inner dentelles, marbleized endpapers, teg, 312p, ribbon marker. Two Bibliophile editions are known to us: MEMOIRS OF FANNY HILL A New and genuine edition from the original text. London: Published for Bibliophiles, 1900, 212pp (Mendes: 38-G), and MEMOIRS OF FANNY HILL, 1904, 2 vol. (Library of Congress: PR3348.C65 M45 1901), but we could find no reference to a Bibliophiles edition dated 1904 in a single volume with 312 pages as this copy is. No names or bookplates. An eminently collectible copy. A small loss to gilt on the rule on rear cover, else fine. (Inventory #: 013304)
