Kenji Mizoguchi's classic fantasy film, and one of the acknowledged masterpieces of post-WWII world cinema. This film, a ghost story, is also a chronicle of the bleakness of war.

After Mizoguchi won the Venice Film Festival award for best director, the movie went on to success in American and European art cinemas, and it marked a beginning of interest there in Japanese movies. In my experience, Japanese vintage photos from classic mid-century films are exceedingly scarce.
