Strong questions the constitutionality of the federal government's call of the Massachusetts militia when the state was not "invaded, or in imminent danger of invasion." Inscribed at head of title page to "D[aniel] Webster Esq. from his h'ble serv't / Jno. Pickering." All three men opposed the involvement of Massachusetts in the war with England. Webster in a powerful July 4th, 1812 oration denounced America's participation in an unjustifiable war. American Imprints 26026.
