A Continent Remade: Reflections on the legacy of independence [etc.]

(B&W photographs) This 52-page Special Section of The New York Times presents eight essays by "luminaries of the African diaspora," reflecting on the 60th anniversary of the "Year of Africa" (1960), during which no fewer than seventeen countries on the continent declared independence from their colonial rulers. The essays are by Imbolo Mbue, Bozoma Saint John, Wayétu Moore, Didier Drogba, David Adjaye, Dinaw Mengestu, Omar Victor Diop, and Luvvie Ajayi, and are complemented by photographs from that remarkable time (39 of them, including the cover image, many printed one to a page), selected from the Times archive and other collections. Per the editor's introduction: "Each of the 17 countries that gained independence that year is represented here, but there are also images from countries, like Ghana, with especially rich photographic traditions." Printed on newsprint (not slick paper, unfortunately), the publication measures approximately 11"x12" (the same size as The New York Times Book Review section). .
