By Smith, John
Boston: Printed by David Carlisle for John West, 1803. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. First printing, octavo size, 56 pp. The author, John Smith (1752-1809) took his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Dartmouth, eventually becoming their first professor of learned languages (Chaldee, Hebrew, Latin and Greek).

This work, "A Hebrew Grammar", was written during Smith's junior year at college, and published later (1803). He also wrote grammars on Chaldee (Aramaic), Latin and Greek that were never published (n.b. above information from the web site of Dartmouth College).

The reason for issuing this Grammar "without points" (the vowel marks in the Hebrew language) was explained by Smith by use of a quote from "Wilson's 'Elements of the Hebrew Grammar' "(p. 55): "Every one acquainted with Hebrew knows, that the whole structure of the language is independent of them, and can be much more easily learned, and much better understood, without than with them."
